News Story

CFT’s work‑experience programme is returning with a refreshed, expanded offer, giving people a chance to discover how a major producing theatre really works from the inside. We sat down with Sally Garner-Gibbons, Apprenticeships Manager & Technical Youth Theatre Lead and Co-Ordinator, to unpack what to expect, what makes a great application and why experiences like this matter.

What departments can you explore during work experience?

Our refreshed work‑experience programme gives students the chance to discover as many departments as possible. These include Technical, Learning, Education and Participation (LEAP), Marketing, Development, Producing, Finance, Box Office and Front of House.

Lots of people are surprised by just how many different jobs exist behind the scenes, and how many skills can translate into roles within theatre. Rather than mastering specific skills in just a few days, you discover what you enjoy and come away with some inspiration.

How competitive is the application process, and what makes an application stand out?

We receive a high number of applications but we're not looking for perfection, we're looking for authenticity. Standout applications are those written in the applicant’s own voice, explaining why the placement matters to them and what they hope to gain. Passion and a clear sense of purpose are what really shine through.

The magic of work experience isn’t about learning every skill in a week, it’s about discovering where you might belong.

Have any past work experience candidates stayed involved or gone on to careers in the arts?

Yes, plenty! One former work‑experience student who joined the costume team now works with CFT as a head of department. Many others have maintained long‑term relationships with the theatre after their placement.

When young people walk through our doors, they realise there’s a place for their talents here, even ones they never knew could shine in a theatre.

Why is work experience in the arts important right now?

The arts help us tell the stories of our time. Work experience shows young people the breadth of roles that make creative storytelling possible, from fundraising and producing to marketing and technical theatre. It’s a chance to discover where they might play a part in bringing those stories to life.

If you’re interested in joining our Work Experience programme at CFT, please complete the online application form by midday on Monday 30 March.

We expect placements to be in high demand, and unfortunately we aren’t able to offer a week to every applicant. When completing the form, please indicate your availability; placements will be allocated based on the dates you provide. Our work experience weeks run from May to October.

If you have any questions about the application process or how the placement works, please email work.experience@cft.org.uk.
