We are thrilled to be welcoming ThickSkin back to the Minerva Theatre for the fourth year running with their brand-new ghost story, It Walks Around The House At Night. Read on to learn more about their latest show, coming to the Minerva for a sold-out run from 3 - 7 February, reminisce or discover more about their previous productions and hear from Artistic Director Neil Bettles about how the company benefits from bringing their shows to Chichester audiences year on year:

A young man lies on a single bed with a metal frame and dark bedding, with a lamp beside it. The man appears to be asleep. On the wooden backdrop, white text is projected, that reads: 'The Linden Family | Charles Linden b. 1884'. The bed and lamp are lit in white so that it casts a shadow on the wooden floor.

'Our last four productions have toured to Chichester Festival Theatre, and our annual visit has become a real highlight in our touring calendar. The Minerva is a wonderfully intimate venue, which presents some creative challenges when adapting work to the thrust configuration. We enjoy working through ideas with our creative teams from an early stage to ensure our productions look, feel and sound just right for the space.

We always feel welcomed by the team here — they are some of the friendliest and most professional people we meet in theatres up and down the country. It’s also a pleasure to meet the audiences who come to see our work. A Chichester audience really engages with the play, often staying for post-show discussions or approaching us afterwards to ask thoughtful questions and gain deeper insight into our artistic process.

We’re starting to build a loyal following in Chichester, which is a privilege and a reminder of why returning year on year is so important. For artist-led touring companies like ThickSkin, building long-term relationships and partnerships with regional venues is vital to our work. We rely on these deep relationships to ensure that as many audiences as possible around the country can experience our shows.'

A young man kneels on all floors, looking up with a scared, tense expression. He wears a ragged off-white shirt with a trailing neck tie, blue waistcoat with the buttons undone and dark trousers. The background behind him is dark, but a doorway lets in an ominous wash of blue and purple lighting and smoke. There is a single lamp on a wooden stool to the left.

ThickSkin have consistently impressed our audiences since they brought their poignant production, How Not To Drown, the story of an 11-year-old asylum seeker, in 2023.

A performance imbued with rare authenticity… demonstrates the power of the unheard having a platform to tell their own story

The following year, ThickSkin returned with Peak Stuff, a one-person show that explored our ever-evolving relationship with our ‘stuff’, told through the stories of three young people, all struggling with consumerism in unique and sometimes troubling ways.

ThickSkin are well known for pushing the boundaries of theatre, and I can honestly say that I am so so glad I opened my mind to this production. I encourage everyone to do the same, and support this wonderfully talented company… simply unmissable

Last year, this bold and ambitious company brought a moving two-hander, Driftwood. Set in a fading coastal town, this inspirational story followed two brothers confronting the rifts in their relationship whilst navigating the death of their father.

A truly beautiful, important piece of theatre

This year’s chilling offering comes from the same writer as Driftwood, Tim Foley, and is directed by ThickSkin Artistic Director Neil Bettles. It Walks Around The House At Night follows an out-of-work actor around a haunted manor over the course of five long nights.

It Walks Around The House At Night is now sold out, but check our website from 1pm each day when we release any returned tickets for the evening’s performance.
