This week, students up and down the country are settling into university. And in the rehearsal room for Jamie Bogyo’s brand new play, Safe Space, we’re exploring the Ivy-league halls of one of America’s top universities.

Take a look behind the scenes of this bracing new play in the rehearsal photos.

Two performers are crouched down together. The young man on the left has his back to the camera and holds his hand out to the shoulder of the other young man, who looks at him with a slight frown, as though worried or sad.

Safe Space follows a group of students fighting to change the name of their college. Their campaign sparks debate across campus, and relationships hang in the balance when differences surface between friends and lovers.

Two performers sit together. On the left, a young woman smiles with one hand held up to her chin. On the right, another young woman sings or speaks enthusiastically and holds a script.

The Grace Hopper College at Yale University was renamed from Calhoun College in 2017. Jamie Bogyo’s debut play imagines how the protests and petitions which led up to this change affected the lives of those studying and living there.

A young man stands with one fist raised and a serious expression, as though he is part of a protest.

This fresh new play weaves laugh-out-loud humour and glorious music into a powerful and pertinent story that invites the audience to challenge our own values and biases.

Four young men laugh together. Two sit on the back of an old-fashioned leather sofa, one stands bent over with laughter, and the other has his back to the camera.
