About The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry | West End

Following a sold-out run at the Chichester Festival Theatre, the five-star “pitch-perfect musical” (The Times) transfers to the West End this January.

Funny, profound, deeply moving and uplifting, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry is a joyous new musical adapted by Rachel Joyce from her multi million-selling novel, with 'a ravishing score' (The Times) by the chart-topping indie musician, Passenger (Let Her Go).

Harold Fry was never meant to be a hero. An ordinary man in an ordinary life until a letter from a long-lost friend sends him out the front door… and he keeps on walking. From Devon’s quiet lanes to the windswept streets of Berwick-upon-Tweed, his journey becomes a pilgrimage of love, redemption, and second chances.

Strangers turn into companions, kindness appears in unexpected places, and the road reveals more than Harold ever imagined. Back home, his wife Maureen begins her own journey, one that might bring them together again.

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry is a moving celebration of the human spirit and a reminder it’s never too late to start again.

Katy Rudd (Ballet Shoes, The Ocean at the End of the Lane NT/West End) directs Mark Addy (The Full Monty, The Rig and Game of Thrones) as Harold and Jenna Russell (Sunday in the Park with George, Hello, Dolly) as Maureen.

  • Many characters are gazing wondrously at a man is standing atop a barrel in the centre of the stage. He has his arms wide open. Some of the ensemble are holding tree branches with ribbons tied to them. There are many barrels stacked in the background and others placed amongst the group of people.
  • An older man wearing casual clothes is stood inside a worn-down red telephone box. His hands are clasping the doorframe, and he is looking slightly worried. To his right, a young man dressed in an almost threadbare green jumper with a crown of leaves in his hair is gazing up at him inquisitively. On the other side, a shaggy dog puppet operated by a puppeteer is also looking at the man in the phone box.
  • An eclectic mix of characters are standing, with an older man in the centre, looking tired. There is a vicar, a woman holding a microphone, a puppeteer operating a shaggy dog puppet, another woman wearing a garish magenta poncho and another holding a pink placard which has ‘Queenie’ written three times in bright yellow capital letters. Behind this group is a young man standing at the top of a stack of barrels looking down at them, with twinkling lights in the background.
  • Six dancers are all wearing white t-shirts under sparkling indigo dungarees or pinafores. The two in the front are squatting and have their arms lifted above their heads, while the other four are stood up straight behind them. The standing dancers are holding aloft cheerleader pom-poms. In the centre of this group, a young woman is posing confidently with her arms extended upwards. She is wearing a shimmering wrap dress in a matching colour to the dancers’ costumes with grungy fishnet tights and black combat boots.
