Overview

Acclaimed soprano Kate Royal, accompanied by pianist Joseph Middleton, brings the UK premiere of a new song recital programme to Chichester.

This selection of 24 songs is designed to take you on a day’s journey. Following a young man from dawn to dusk and through the trials of a lonely night, she will perform songs by Mahler, Liszt, Schumann, Vaughan Williams, Britten and many more.

Kate Royal is one of Britain’s most sought after sopranos. She has sung the role of Pamina for The Royal Opera, Paris Opera, Berlin Philharmonic and Glyndebourne Festival; Euridice and Micaela for the Metropolitan Opera New York; and has appeared with the orchestras of La Scala Milan, London Symphony, New York Symphony and Los Angeles Philharmonic. She is passionate about song repertoire and has appeared in recital at London’s Wigmore Hall, Carnegie Hall, Royal Festival Hall, Concertgebouw Amsterdam and Vienna Konzerhaus. Her recordings include ‘Midsummer Night’ with the ENO orchestra, ‘A Lesson in Love‘ with Malcolm Martineau, and Mahler 2 with Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic.

Pianist Joseph Middleton specialises in the art of song accompaniment and chamber music and has been highly acclaimed in this field. He is Director of Leeds Lieder, Musician in Residence at Pembroke College, Cambridge and a Fellow of his alma mater, the Royal Academy of Music, where he is a Professor. He was the first accompanist to win the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Young Artist Award. He is a frequent guest at major music centres including the Wigmore Hall, Royal Opera House, New York’s Alice Tully Hall, Concertgebouw Amsterdam and many international festivals. He frequently curates his own series on BBC Radio 3 and has a fast-growing and award-winning discography.
