Overview

Only love can save me and love has destroyed me.

In the darkness of a damaged world, four characters search for the light.

Angry, funny, defiant, kind and cruel, Crave is a deeply personal meditation on the meaning of love. It pulses with loss and longing.

Sarah Kane is considered to be one of the most influential playwrights of the 20th century. She came to prominence in 1995 with her seminal first play, Blasted. Over her short career she wrote five plays and a film. Crave premiered in August 1998 at the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh. Today, her plays are performed around the world.

Crave will be staged in the Spiegeltent, which returns to Chichester following the success of 2019’s Sing Yer Heart Out for the Lads. It will be directed by Tinuke Craig, whose production of random/generations was a highlight of Festival 2018; since then, her work includes The Color Purple (Curve Leicester), Vassa (Almeida) and the forthcoming Jitney (Headlong/Leeds Playhouse).

Content and Themes

At CFT, we want everyone to feel truly welcome and comfortable. While we try not to spoil anyone’s enjoyment by giving away ‘spoilers’ such as plot twists and narrative surprises, we also recognise that some people may find certain themes distressing. You’ll find guidance on such content below; please be aware that by reading this, some elements of the plot may be revealed. Please note that this may be updated nearer the time of the production as staging details are confirmed.

Theatre to binge watch

See four shows in a weekend

This year we are reintroducing repertory in the Festival Theatre which means there are opportunities to binge-watch four productions in three different venues in Chichester over a single weekend - a proper theatrical treat!

Friday 16 - Sunday 18 October

Start with The Taxidermist’s Daughter on Friday evening in the Festival Theatre. On Saturday afternoon, catch the world premiere of The Narcissist in the Minerva Theatre followed by Sarah Kane's Crave in the Spiegeltent. Finally on the Sunday afternoon, experience Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman’s darkly comic musical Assassins.

Friday 23 - Saturday 24 October

Start your weekend early with a Friday matinee of Assassins in the Festival Theatre followed by an evening in the Minerva Theatre with The Narcissist. On Saturday, enjoy a matinee of The Taxidermist’s Daughter and Crave in the evening.

Please note, other configurations are possible on this weekend.

Friday 30 - Sunday 1 November

Watch three shows and a cabaret in this special weekender: On Friday morning, don't miss a chance to explore behind the scenes on one of our 60-minute backstage Theatre Tours. Then catch The Taxidermist’s Daughter on Friday night, and choose your order of Assassins and Crave on Saturday. Finish the weekend with Sunday in the Park with Daniel a dazzling evening of music and song in celebration of Sondheim's 90th birthday.
