Overview

Hey pal - feelin' blue? Don't know what to do? C'mere and shoot a President.

A surreal fairground attraction, where a motley crew of visitors gather to try their luck at winning prizes. They have one thing in common: the American dream has twisted their lives into an American nightmare. Each of them will take aim at the highest seat of power in the land.

Some succeed, some fail. But there’s a prize for them all: a place in the history books.

John Wilkes Booth. Lee Harvey Oswald. Leon Czolgosz. Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme. John Hinckley. Charles Guiteau. Sara Jane Moore. Giuseppe Zangara. Samuel Byck. Men and women whose fervour took them to the very edge.

Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman’s Tony Award-winning musical takes us on a daring, darkly comic, time-bending journey through American history.

This new production marks Sondheim’s 90th birthday year. A giant of contemporary musical theatre, celebrated for the inventive sophistication of his melodies and lyrics, his landmark works also include Company, Follies and Sweeney Todd, produced at Chichester in 2011.

John Weidman’s Tony-Award winning works include Contact as well two further collaborations with Sondheim, Road Show and Pacific Overtures.

Director Polly Findlay makes her Chichester debut. Her recent productions include A Number (Bridge Theatre), Rutherford and Son, Beginning (NT and West End) and The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (Donmar Warehouse).

Theatre to binge watch

See four shows in a weekend

This year we are reintroducing repertory in the Festival Theatre which means there are opportunities to binge-watch four productions in three different venues in Chichester over a single weekend - a proper theatrical treat!

Friday 16 - Sunday 18 October

Start with The Taxidermist’s Daughter on Friday evening in the Festival Theatre. On Saturday afternoon, catch the world premiere of The Narcissist in the Minerva Theatre followed by Sarah Kane's Crave in the Spiegeltent. Finally on the Sunday afternoon, experience Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman’s darkly comic musical Assassins.

Friday 23 - Saturday 24 October

Start your weekend early with a Friday matinee of Assassins in the Festival Theatre followed by an evening in the Minerva Theatre with The Narcissist. On Saturday, enjoy a matinee of The Taxidermist’s Daughter and Crave in the evening.

Please note, other configurations are possible on this weekend.

Friday 30 - Sunday 1 November

Watch three shows and a cabaret in this special weekender: On Friday morning, don't miss a chance to explore behind the scenes on one of our 60-minute backstage Theatre Tours. Then catch The Taxidermist’s Daughter on Friday night, and choose your order of Assassins and Crave on Saturday.
