For Sheffield Theatres directing credits include The Nap, Blasted (Sarah Kane Season), Love Your Soldiers, That Face, The Pride, Lungs (co-production by Paines Plough/The Roundabout Season and Shoreditch Town Hall) and Straight (also Bush Theatre).

Richard also has numerous television credits including Merlin and One Foot in the Grave.

Recent stage work includes Krapp’s Last Tape (Sheffield Theatres), A Little Hotel on the Side (Theatre Royal Bath), Twelfth Night (RSC/West End) and Whipping It Up (Bush Theatre, West End and tour). Richard is a former Associate Director of the Royal Court Theatre and was recently an Associate Director for Sheffield Theatres.

In 1994 he was awarded the OBE for Services to Drama as a director and actor. From 1996-99 he was Rector of Glasgow University. He is the visiting professor for Drama at Glasgow University. He has honorary degrees from Glasgow University and the University of Caledonia and last year he was awarded an honorary Doctorate from Sheffield Hallam University. Richard was recently presented a BAFTA Scotland Award for Outstanding Contribution to Television and Film.
