An exhibition of work by Charlotte McCarthy, MA Fine Art Student at the University of Chichester and Chichester Festival Theatre’s 2019 Emerging Artist in Residence, is now on view in the Theatre foyer.
This is the fifth annual artist’s residency at CFT, demonstrating the strong partnership between the Festival Theatre and the University of Chichester’s Fine Art Department. The residency aims to help develop practical skills and knowledge to inform the artist's practice, culminating in an onsite exhibition each year.
Alongside learning new skills in the Props Department and researching original technical drawings from the Theatre archive at West Sussex Record Office, Charlotte spent time sketching the Theatre building, focusing on the sharp lines and shapes of the Brutalist architecture. She says: ‘As a Sculptural Installation Artist, my work revolves around how people view, inhabit and explore the spaces around them. As part of this residency, I wanted to strip back the visual stimuli that allow the human eye to get distracted.’
In this exhibition, Charlotte presents a selection of works made throughout her three-month residency.
