If a person can't be what they are, what's the purpose of being anything at all?

Harry and Jack. Marjorie and Kathleen. Alfred.

In a neglected garden, small talk oscillates between the weather, the neighbours, reminiscences of friends and family, and anecdotes of past exploits in love and war.

But this quintet of characters, with their foibles and failings, are not what they seem to be, and nor is their home. And overhead, the clouds are gathering.

David Storey’s award-winning 1970 play has become a modern classic – a heartrendingly funny, haunting and deeply humane study of hearts, minds and England: islands adrift.

Leon Annor plays Alfred; his recent stage work includes As You Like It for the National Theatre, while film and television credits include Stay Close, Mister Winner and Britannia.

Hayley Carmichael (Kathleen) is co-founder of Told By An Idiot and has appeared in many of their productions, as well as working with the National Theatre, Complicité and Kneehigh. TV includes Call The Midwife, Witness for the Prosecution and Les Misérables.

Daniel Cerqueira (Harry)’s extensive theatre work includes Richard III and Game (Almeida), Birdland (Royal Court), Fortune’s Fool (Old Vic) and Table (National Theatre); his screen work includes The A Word, Pennyworth, Doctor Foster, War of the Worlds and Judy.

Doña Croll (Marjorie)’s theatre work includes Pride and Prejudice (Regent’s Park), Kate Keller in All My Sons (Talawa) and Elmina’s Kitchen (National Theatre); her many TV appearances include Death in Paradise, The Long Song, Family Affairs, Doctors and Casualty.

John Mackay (Jack)’s theatre work includes Six Characters in Search of an Author at Chichester, Richard II and Machinal (Almeida) and the title role in Richard III (Tobacco Factory): TV includes Bridgerton and Black Earth Rising.

Director Josh Roche won the JMK Award for his production of My Name Is Rachel Corrie at the Young Vic with Erin Doherty in the title role. He has directed productions for Audible UK, BBC Arts, and has worked extensively at the RSC and Shakespeare’s Globe. He is the co-founder of OpenHire.

Superb revival that delves deeply into David Storey’s absurdist exploration of lives in crisis. Cerqueira and Mackay land their inane chatter with gentle, and hilarious, comic timing. Carmichael deftly mingles scorn and kindness. Croll cuts through the faffing of the other characters like a knife, bringing a direct – and welcome – angry energy. Josh Roche’s excellent revival uses humour to break into the core of Storey’s surrealistic exploration of masculinity and mental health against a backdrop of denial and incarceration

Absorbing. Josh Roche's beautifully observed production embraces Storey's brilliant writing. Sophie Thomas' naturalistic and exquisite design is equally as evasive and as the mood of the piece. Special mention also must go to Alex Musgrave's lighting design, which wonderfully recreates the moving light of a cloud-filled sky. Roche directs his small company with skill and a gentleness of touch that brings the vulnerability to the fore.

For all its melancholy the play is also very, very funny.

The first sight of Sophie Thomas’s set brought gasps of admiration.
Superb performances from Daniel Cerqueira and John Mackay, Hayley Carmichael’s bubbly, giggly Kathleen balanced by the no-nonsense, loud, controlling voice of Doña Croll’s Marjorie are beautifully performed, Leon Annor excellently presents Alfred. Written in the 1970s it seems more relevant than ever, Josh Roche’s production had given us a lot of thought and much to discuss.

Covid guidelines

Welcoming you to the Theatre safely

Performances from September 2021

The following measures will be in place for your visit in the coming months. We always ensure that our procedures are in line with current government guidelines, so please do check the website, and this page before your visit for the latest information.

  • E-tickets will be issued as standard. These do not have to be printed but can be shown on your smartphone or similar device for us to scan on entry. In order to reduce queueing and minimise contact, tickets will not be available for collection from the Box Office
  • We will carry out enhanced cleaning of all public areas, both prior to and during performances.
  • Hand sanitising stations positioned throughout the building.
  • During the interval we ask that people are mindful of other patrons, and take note of any directional signage that may be in place to regulate the flow of patrons through the building.
  • Face coverings are strongly recommended, in line with government advice, for the duration of your visit (except for eating and drinking) unless exempt for health reasons. Our Front of House staff will continue to wear face coverings.
  • Bars, Cafes and restaurants will be open, but transactions will be cashless and paperless, with perspex screens fitted at all sale points. Please check the website before your visit for the most up to date information.
  • Our auditoriums, foyer and restaurant spaces run at 100% fresh air ventilation. Due to current circumstances relating to Covid-19, our systems are set to run full (100%) fresh air only, during rehearsals and public events for a minimum of 1.5 hours before and 1.5 hours after occupation. Our supply air is drawn in via the intake ducts on the roof, passed through a two-stage filtration system removing particulates down to between 0.3µm-1.0µm (Micro millimetres). The extract system draws air upwards and out of the auditorium through ducts to the atmosphere.

For maximized flexibility, if you cannot attend, you can exchange your ticket for FREE up to at least 24 hours prior to the event (subject to availability).
