Ibsen’s late masterwork is an enthralling tragedy of betrayal, guilt, sexual passion and the disintegration of love. Halvard Solness, the leading architect of his age, is at the end of his career. A single-minded man of angry pride, trapped in a loveless marriage to Aline, both mourning the death of their children, he is fearful of being eclipsed by the younger generation snapping at his heels.
A decade after their first meeting, back into his life comes the charismatic and beautiful young Hilde Wangel. She inspires him to build one final masterpiece. But will his last towering achievement be the destruction of them both?
Ibsen creates a claustrophobic tangle of human relationships, a compelling portrait of one man’s obsessive determination to succeed at any length, and an absorbing examination of what might lie on the darker side of ambition.
Michael Pennington (Festival 09’s Collaboration and Taking Sides; extensive work with the RSC, the National Theatre, the English Shakespeare Company and in the West End) plays Halvard Solness. Maureen Beattie (the RSC's 2008 company for The History Plays, Macbeth, Othello, Medea, Casualty, The Bill, Lewis, Bramwell and Midsomer Murders) plays Aline Solness. Naomi Frederick (As You Like It, Mrs Affleck, Brief Encounter, Measure for Measure, Time and The Conways, Three Sisters, My Family) plays Hilde Wangel.
Henrik Ibsen’s plays include A Doll’s House, Ghosts, The Wild Duck and Hedda Gabler.
David Edgar’s adaptations include Nicholas Nickleby (Festivals 06 and 07). His plays include Destiny, Maydays, Pentecost and Playing with Fire. He has translated Brecht’s Galileo.
