William Shakespeare is in the last days of his life. Faced with the prospect of losing the land he bought with the money made from his plays, he finds himself in the same situation as one of his greatest characters, Lear. Using contemporary documents and what is known of him as a writer and a man, Edward Bond shows that the contradictions of Shakespeare’s life and time are uncannily close to those of our own. He, too, lives in crisis.
Patrick Stewart (Festival 07’s Macbeth and Twelfth Night; Waiting for Godot, Hamlet, The Tempest, X-Men and Star Trek) plays William Shakespeare.
Catherine Cusack’s theatre credits include The Early Bird, Bold Girls, Factory Girls, Mary Stuart, The Mill on the Floss and Our Lady of Sligo. Her television credits include Doctors, Jonathan Creek, Ballykissangel, Coronation Street and Doctor Who.

His television credits include Wallander and Spooks. Films include The Constant Gardener, Vanity Fair, Notting Hill, Master and Commander and Persuasion.
Jason Watkins’ theatre credits include Our Class, The Late Henry Moss, A Laughing Matter, Servant to Two Masters and King Lear. Television includes Being Human, Little Dorrit, Miss Austen Regrets, Housewife 49. Films include Nativity, Confetti, The Golden Compass and Bridget Jones.
