MapDance
“Inches from its audience, the troupe radiated energy. A sharp and pithy showcase…rare to find and thrilling to watch”
Lisa Wolfe, Total Theatre 2009
Now in its fourth year, mapdance has established itself as an exciting postgraduate company of young, dynamic dancers recruited nationally and internationally, performing a diverse repertoire by renowned and upcoming contemporary choreographers.
Ranging in style and emotion, mapdance’s programme offers a diverse and refreshing evening of short dance works by Shobana Jeyasingh (Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company), Matthias Sperling (Random), Gregory Maqoma (Vuyani Dance Theatre) and Colin Poole (Rambert, The Mission) – a programme that offers a mixture of dance theatre, punchy choreography, and intriguing humour. It is a mixed programme with something for everyone.
One of Britain’s most outstanding and unique choreographers, Shobana Jeyasingh uses influences from a range of contemporary and South Asian dance styles, mixing dynamic power with articulate gesture. Performed to Steve Reich’s triple quartet, her work bodytalk captures the many voices of the body. Find out more about Shobana Jeyasingh at www.shobanajeyasingh.co.uk.
Edgy and sensual Colin Poole is interested in exploring the dynamics of human relationship through dance. His work crush explores the desire to belong and the pressure of belonging.
Described as ‘one of the most cutting edge choreographers to emerge from Africa’, Gregory Maqoma’s Zola Station, is an adrenalin rush , taking its inspiration from this notorious area in Soweto.
In Falling down and Getting Back up Again Matthias Sperling invites us to dwell on pertinent questions regarding the nature of performance?
