The Last Cigarette
With Felicity Kendal, Nicholas Le Prevost and Jasper Britton
By Simon Gray and Hugh Whitemore
Warm, candid and with a double dose of dark humour, this dramatisation of Simon Gray's The Smoking Diaries and other memoirs was completed just before his death last summer.
Notable for his uncompromising honesty and a wit both fierce and fearless, Gray's voice was uniquely his own - intelligent, probing and often outrageously funny. He faced life - and death - with unflinching courage and defiant humanity; even when writing about his own mortality, he lost none of his prodigious talent to entertain. His other plays include Butley, Otherwise Engaged, Quatermaine's Terms, Hidden Laughter and The Common Pursuit, and his volumes of memoirs include Fat Chance, Enter a Fox, The Smoking Diaries and Coda.
At the National Theatre Felicity Kendal's credits include Amadeus, Othello and The Second Mrs Tanqueray, and, in the West End, The Real Thing, Indian Ink, Arcadia, Fallen Angels, Happy Days, The Vortex and Simon Gray's Hidden Laughter.
Nicholas Le Prevost's recent theatre credits include Uncle Vanya, How the Other Half Lives, The Wild Duck, The Philadelphia Story, My Fair Lady and The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. His television credits include Margaret, Psychoville, Above Suspicion, Half Broken Things and Poirot.
Jasper Britton's recent theatre credits include Oedipus at the National Theatre and Rhinoceros at the Royal Court. He was last at Chichester in 2006 in The Father. His television credits include Midsomer Murders and My Dad's the Prime Minister.
As Artistic Director of the National Theatre (1987-97), Richard Eyre's productions include Sweet Bird of Youth, John Gabriel Borkman and Richard III as well as numerous plays by David Hare and Tom Stoppard. His recent credits include Hedda Gabler and Mary Poppins. His films include Iris, Notes on a Scandal and Stage Beauty.
Hugh Whitemore's plays include Stevie, Pack of Lies, Breaking the Code, A Letter of Resignation and, most recently, an adaptation of Luigi Pirandello's As You Desire Me. His film and television scripts include the Emmy Award-winning The Gathering Storm.
