Overview

An enduring fantasy on class and the political system.

Vivacious, political and very timely, Iolanthe tells the comic tale of how the topsy-turvy world of Parliament is invaded by fairies in one of Gilbert & Sullivan’s most hilarious and absurdly sweet operettas.

Fairyland is in a collision with the political establishment as a half-fairy Arcadian shepherd attempts to find true love with Phyllis, a woman who is ward of court to the Lord Chancellor. As his fairy queen mother and aunts storm Westminster to make him a Member of Parliament, so he can win the girl, confusion and hilarity ensue.

No stranger to the Gilbert & Sullivan repertoire, Sylvia Clarke plays the Fairy Queen. Previously a member of the Sydney Operetta Touring Theatre Company and resident mezzo with the West Australian Opera Company, her recent credits include Yeoman of the Guard, Patience, The Gondoliers and The Pirates of Penzance. This year she will be performing in The Mikado and HMS Pinafore for the international G&S Festival.

Richard Suart plays The Lord Chancellor. Recent credits include The Merry Widow, The Pirates of Penzance, The Mikado and Die Fledermaus. Richard is Vice President of the Gilbert & Sullivan Society.

Carl Rosa Opera return to Chichester with its high quality light opera - an ideal introduction to the genre.
