Overview
Haydn Symphony no. 104 (London)
R. Strauss Horn Concerto no. 1
Enesco Romanian Rhapsody no. 1
The BBC Concert Orchestra brings you the most Essential Classics of the year.
Haydn’s magnificent Symphony no. 104 is a tour de force. From the first bar to the last he never squanders a note. Known as the father of the classical form, his last symphony is a master piece which has delighted audiences around the world for over 200 years. For horn players, Strauss is the main man. His virtuosic first horn concerto was written for his father when he was just 18, and it is probably the greatest work in modern times for the instrument. Enesco is Romania’s no.1 composer and his Romanian Rhapsody is full of gritty folk tunes and exotic melodies which brilliantly conjure up the colours of his native country.
Brought together in one concert by the orchestra’s Principal Guest Conductor Johannes Wildner, it will be an evening of the very best – and essential – classical music.
As well as its weekly slot on BBC Radio 2, the orchestra give regular broadcasts on BBC Radio 3. Its work can be heard annually at the BBC Proms and on BBC TV programmes including Frozen Planet, Planet Earth and ZingZillas.
